Bi-fold & folding glass walls

Folding glass walls that open almost the entire opening

Bi-fold doors are glass panels hinged together that fold up like an accordion to one or both sides, clearing nearly the whole opening. We help you decide between folding and multi-slide systems, then install a Florida-approved folding wall built for our sun, rain and design pressures.

  • Near-full-width opening
  • Traffic-door layouts

An opening that folds away

A folding glass wall — often called a bi-fold or accordion door — is a row of glass panels hinged to one another. Pull the end panel and the whole wall concertinas to the side, with the panels stacking neatly at one or both ends. Because the folded panels sit perpendicular to the opening, almost the entire width is left clear.

Folding or multi-slide?

These are the two premium ways to open up a wall, and the right choice depends on how you live and how exposed the opening is:

  • Choose folding when you want the absolute widest clear opening and the wall is sheltered by a deep lanai roof.
  • Choose multi-slide when the opening is exposed to weather, when you want fewer and larger panes of glass, or when impact ratings on large panels matter most.

We price both for your opening so you can compare the look, the performance and the cost side by side.

Why folding glass walls

Why choose a folding glass wall

The widest clear opening

Folded panels stack at the ends, so almost the entire width opens — more than a stacking slider.

Everyday traffic door

Many layouts include a hinged "traffic door" so you can pop outside without folding the whole wall.

Dramatic transformation

Folding the wall open is a genuine "wow" moment for guests.

Flexible layouts

Fold to the left, right, or split from the middle to both sides.

Styles & configurations

Folding door layouts

Plan views from above. Dashed lines show the closed position.

Fold to one side INSIDE DASHED = CLOSED POSITION

Fold to one side

All panels fold to one end. Simple and clean for openings up to around 12 to 16 feet.

Split, fold to both sides INSIDE DASHED = CLOSED POSITION

Split, fold to both sides

Panels divide and fold to both ends — ideal for very wide, centered openings.

With a traffic door INSIDE DASHED = CLOSED POSITION

With a traffic door

An odd number of panels lets one act as a hinged door for everyday use.

Where they work best

When a folding wall beats a multi-slide

You want the whole opening clear

Folding stacks take up less of the opening than sliding stacks.

Covered lanais and outdoor kitchens

Folding walls perform best under a roof that keeps rain off the sill and panels.

Entertaining spaces

Kitchens and bars that open onto a lanai serve both sides at once.

Mild-weather living

Central Florida's spring and fall are made for walls that open.

What to know about folding doors in Florida

Folding systems have more joints, hinges and seals than sliders, so they are typically best on covered, sheltered openings. For exterior openings we only install folding systems with Florida Product Approval for your design pressure — impact-rated options exist but are more limited in size.

How impact ratings work
  • Choose a sill profile matched to exposure; flush sills need drainage and shelter.
  • Aluminum frames with thermal breaks balance strength, slim profiles and efficiency.
  • Tracks should be kept clear of sand, leaves and pool debris for smooth operation.
  • Compare impact-rated folding and multi-slide options side by side before deciding.

Before you order

Before you order a folding door

  1. Fold direction

Decide where the folded stack will sit and make sure furniture and walkways work around it.

  2. Inside or outside fold

Panels can stack to the inside or outside — outside keeps interior space clear.

  3. Traffic door

If you will use it daily, plan an odd panel count with a hinged traffic door.

  4. Sill and exposure

The more weather the opening sees, the more you should favor a raised, drained sill.

Questions

Bi-Fold Glass Doors: frequently asked questions

Are bi-fold doors a good idea in Florida?

They are wonderful on covered lanais and sheltered openings. On exposed walls facing afternoon storms, a multi-slide system is often the better performer.

Can folding glass doors be impact-rated?

Some can. Impact-rated folding systems are available with Florida approvals, typically with more limits on panel size than multi-slide systems.

How do you get in and out without folding the whole wall?

Choose a layout with a traffic door — a panel that opens like a regular hinged door.

Do folding doors need a special header?

Folding doors are sensitive to header movement, so the header must be stiff enough for the span. We check it and coordinate structural work if needed.

How do I maintain a folding door?

Keep the tracks clean, rinse the frames periodically and have the hinges and rollers checked if operation changes.
