Garage doors

Wind-rated garage doors built for Florida's storm season

The garage door is the largest opening on most homes — and one of the most important in a hurricane. We install wind-rated and impact-rated garage doors across Central Florida, from insulated raised-panel doors to carriage-house and modern glass designs, permitted and installed to their product approval.

The biggest opening on your house

On most Central Florida homes, a two-car garage door is 16 feet wide — by far the largest opening in the building envelope. When a non-rated garage door buckles in high wind, air rushes into the garage and pressurizes the house from the inside, adding uplift on the roof. That is why Florida treats garage doors as structural components with their own product approvals and wind ratings.

Wind-rated vs. impact-rated

  • Wind-rated doors are built and tested to resist the design wind pressure for your location. They use reinforcing struts, heavier-gauge hinges and tracks and a specific jamb fastening pattern.
  • Impact-rated doors meet the same pressure requirements and pass debris-impact testing. They are the choice when you want every opening protected — for peace of mind or wind-mitigation credits.

More than a storm door

A new insulated garage door also makes the garage cooler, quieter and more usable — a real benefit when the garage is also the laundry room, the gym or the workshop. And because the garage door is such a big part of the front of the house, a new style and color can refresh the whole exterior.

Why garage doors

Why the garage door matters so much

Protects the whole house

If a garage door fails in high wind, pressure can build inside the home and contribute to roof damage. A properly rated door keeps the envelope closed.

A cooler garage

Insulated doors keep Florida garages noticeably cooler — and the rooms next to them.

Quieter operation

Insulated sections, nylon rollers and a belt-drive opener make a big difference.

Big curb appeal

The garage door can be a third of your home's front elevation — updating it transforms the look.

Styles & configurations

Garage door styles

Raised or recessed panel

Classic short- and long-panel designs that suit most Central Florida homes.

Carriage house

The look of swing-out doors with the convenience of a sectional door — decorative handles and hinges included.

Flush & modern

Smooth, flat or grooved panels in bold colors for contemporary homes.

Full-view aluminum & glass

Glass sections in slim frames — dramatic on modern homes (impact-rated glass required for impact-rated doors).

Windows & inserts

Add a row of windows for daylight, with privacy glass or decorative inserts.

Woodgrain finishes

Steel doors embossed and finished to look like stained wood.

Where they work best

When it's time to replace the garage door

No wind rating label

Older doors may not be rated for today's design pressures and often need temporary bracing before storms.

Dented, rusted or noisy

Damaged sections, rusted bottoms and worn hardware are signs the door is near the end of its life.

A hot garage

Uninsulated doors radiate heat into the garage and nearby rooms.

Refreshing the exterior

Paired with a new front door, a new garage door can change the whole look of the house.

Florida code & climate

Garage doors and Florida wind loads

In Florida, a garage door is a structural component of the building envelope. It must be rated for the design pressure at your home and carry Florida Product Approval, and the permit inspection checks it. Wind-rated doors use reinforcing struts, heavier hinges and tracks, and specific fastening to the jambs.

How impact ratings work
  • Wind-rated doors resist pressure; impact-rated doors are also tested against debris. Inland homes usually need wind-rated as a minimum.
  • If you want the credit for full opening protection, the garage door typically needs to be impact-rated too.
  • Windows in an impact-rated door must use impact-rated glass.
  • The door's label (usually on an end stile) identifies its rating — leave it in place.

Before you order

Before you order a garage door

  1. Rating

Confirm the design pressure your home requires, then decide between wind-rated and impact-rated.

  2. Insulation

Polyurethane-insulated doors are quieter and more efficient than polystyrene or uninsulated doors.

  3. Style and windows

Match your home's architecture — and your HOA's rules — with panel style, color and windows.

  4. Opener

Replacing an old opener at the same time? Belt drives are quietest; wall-mount units free up the ceiling.

Questions

Garage Doors: frequently asked questions

Do garage doors need to be wind-rated in Central Florida?

Yes. Replacement garage doors must meet the design pressure for your home and have Florida Product Approval. Impact rating is usually optional inland but required in some locations.

Is it worth getting an impact-rated garage door?

If you are protecting every other opening for storm protection or insurance credits, the garage door usually needs to be impact-rated too. Otherwise, a wind-rated door meets code for most inland homes.

Do you need a permit to replace a garage door?

Most jurisdictions in Central Florida require a permit for garage door replacement. We handle it and schedule the inspection.

Can I keep my existing opener?

Often, if it is in good condition and suited to the new door's weight. Many homeowners replace an older opener at the same time for quieter, safer operation.

How long does garage door installation take?

Most garage doors are installed in a single day, including the opener.
