Double entry doors

Double entry doors that make a grand entrance — and hold up in a storm

Double doors are the signature entry of countless Central Florida homes. We replace worn pairs with matched door systems — often with a new arched transom and impact glass — and we pay special attention to the bolts and astragal that hold the pair together when the wind picks up.

  • Arched & rectangular transoms
  • Decorative & privacy glass
  • Impact-rated pairs
  • Inswing or outswing

The classic Central Florida entry

Walk through almost any neighborhood built in the 1990s and 2000s — from Hunter’s Creek to Heathrow to Celebration — and you will see double entry doors with an arched transom. After 20 or 30 years of sun and storms, those doors tend to show the same problems: faded finishes, clouded decorative glass, sagging leaves, and a center seam that whistles when the wind blows.

We replace the whole assembly with a matched double-door system: two leaves, a new frame, a properly engineered bolt system for the fixed leaf, a fresh astragal and weatherstripping, and — if you like — a new transom and impact glass throughout.

Choosing the look

  • Glass or solid? Three-quarter and full-lite leaves bring in light; solid leaves with a glass transom give privacy with a bright foyer.
  • Decorative glass — beveled, textured and leaded patterns in a range of privacy levels.
  • Hardware — a single handleset on the active leaf with a dummy on the inactive leaf, or long matched pull handles for a modern look.
  • Finish — stained woodgrain fiberglass, painted fiberglass or steel, or real wood for covered entries.

Bring your HOA’s guidelines to the estimate — we will help you match approved styles and assemble the paperwork.

Why double entry doors

Why a new pair makes such a difference

A true focal point

A wide, bright entry with matching glass and hardware changes the whole front of the house.

Stronger in storms

Modern pairs lock the fixed leaf into the head and sill with heavy-duty bolts — the weak point of many older doors.

A center seal that works

A new astragal and weatherstripping close the gap between leaves where older pairs leak air and water.

Easier to move things in

Open both leaves for furniture, appliances and holiday guests.

Styles & configurations

Double door configurations

Plan views from above. The swing direction affects how the doors handle wind and rain and how much room they need.

Inswing pair INSIDE OUTSIDE

Inswing pair

The traditional choice. Needs clear floor space inside the foyer for both leaves to open.

Outswing pair INSIDE OUTSIDE

Outswing pair

Wind pressure pushes the doors into the frame, which helps with water and wind resistance. Needs space on the porch.

Active + inactive leaf INSIDE OUTSIDE

Active + inactive leaf

One leaf opens for everyday use; the other stays bolted until you need the full width.

Where they work best

Best fits for double doors

Replacing an existing pair

The most common project — keep the opening, upgrade everything that failed.

Wide openings of 5 to 6 feet

Pairs of 30- or 36-inch leaves are the standard building blocks, with 8-foot heights available.

Homes in higher design-pressure areas

Impact-rated pairs replace the weak link many older homes have at the front door.

Dark, enclosed foyers

Glass leaves plus an arched transom can transform a dim entry.

Florida code & climate

Why double doors need extra care in Florida

A pair of doors has no center post, so the fixed leaf's bolts and the astragal between the leaves carry the load when wind pushes on the door. Older pairs with short flush bolts are a common failure point. Rated double-door systems are tested as a complete assembly — leaves, bolts, frame and fasteners together.

How impact ratings work
  • Impact-rated pairs use reinforced bolts that engage the head and sill, not just surface flush bolts.
  • Outswing pairs are popular here because positive wind pressure pushes them closed against the frame.
  • Arched transoms must also meet the design pressure and, when required, impact rating.
  • We confirm the assembly's Florida Product Approval covers your exact size and configuration.

Before you order

Before you order a double door

  1. Swing direction

Check the foyer and the porch — can both leaves open fully without hitting walls, rugs, steps or planters?

  2. Glass and privacy

Decorative and textured glass balances light and privacy; full clear glass shows off the view but also the interior.

  3. Transom shape

Keep your existing transom shape or change it — arched, elliptical and rectangular are all available.

  4. Everyday leaf

Decide which side is the active leaf based on traffic, light switches and furniture.

Questions

Double Entry Doors: frequently asked questions

Can you replace just one of my double doors?

Rarely. The two leaves, astragal, bolts and frame work as a system. Replacing one leaf usually leaves the problems — and a mismatched look — behind.

Are double doors less secure than single doors?

Older pairs with short flush bolts can be. Modern systems with long head and sill bolts and a multipoint lock on the active leaf are very secure.

Can I switch from a single door with sidelites to double doors?

Often, yes, if the overall opening is wide enough. Removing sidelites and adding a second leaf can keep the rough opening the same size.

Are impact-rated double doors available with decorative glass?

Yes. Many decorative glass designs are available in laminated impact glass, including matching transoms.

How long does double door installation take?

Usually one to two days, depending on the transom and any stucco or framing repairs.
