Light, air and a second layer

A storm door is a lightweight outer door — usually aluminum with glass and screen panels — that mounts in front of your main entry door. On a pleasant Central Florida morning in March or November, it lets you open the front door, let the breeze in and keep the bugs out. The rest of the year, the glass panel adds a layer between your entry door and the weather.

Honest guidance on sun and storms

Two things are worth knowing before you buy:

  1. A storm door is not hurricane protection. It is not impact-rated and will not protect the opening in a storm. If storm protection is the goal, an impact-rated entry door is the right product.
  2. Direct sun and storm doors don’t mix well. A glass storm door in full afternoon sun can trap intense heat against your entry door. Many manufacturers warn against it or restrict their warranties. We check your entry’s orientation and overhang and recommend the right glass, venting or screen-only option.

Get those two right, and a quality storm door is a simple, affordable upgrade you will enjoy every mild-weather day.

Why storm & screen doors

Why add a storm door

Fresh air, no bugs

Swap glass for screen — or roll down a retractable screen — and let a breeze through during Florida's mild months.

Show off your entry

Full-view glass keeps a beautiful front door visible while adding a protective layer.

Extra security

Keyed handles and security storm doors add a second locked barrier at the entry.

Pets and kids

Pet-friendly screens and closers that close the door gently behind small hands and paws.

Styles & configurations

Storm & screen door styles

Full-view

Full-height glass panel that swaps for a screen — the most popular style for showing off the entry door.

Retractable screen

A screen that rolls into the frame and pulls down when you want ventilation. No panels to store.

Mid-view & high-view

A solid lower panel for durability with glass or screen above — practical for busy households and pets.

Security storm doors

Heavy steel frames and decorative grilles with keyed deadbolts for an extra layer of protection.

Screen doors

Classic ventilating screen doors for side and service entries.

Pet-friendly options

Tougher screen mesh and built-in pet access on select models.

Where they work best

Where storm doors work best

Shaded or covered entries

Entries under a porch roof avoid the heat-buildup issue entirely.

Homes that love fresh air

Open the front door on a cool morning without losing the screen protection.

Protecting a wood or older door

A storm door shields the entry door from rain and wear on covered entries.

Side and garage entries

A ventilating screen door is perfect for garages and laundry rooms.

Florida code & climate

The heat-buildup warning most installers skip

When a glass storm door sits in direct sun in front of an entry door, the air space between them can get extremely hot — hot enough to warp or blister some entry doors and their finishes. Many entry-door manufacturers restrict or void warranties in this situation. We check orientation and shade first and recommend venting, Low-E glass or a screen-only solution when the entry faces the sun.

How impact ratings work
  • Storm doors are not hurricane protection. They are not impact-rated shutters and are not a substitute for them.
  • Low-E storm door glass and ventilating features reduce heat buildup on sunnier entries.
  • Choose corrosion-resistant hardware and closers for Florida humidity.
  • Ask us to confirm your entry door's warranty terms before adding a storm door over it.

Before you order

Before you order a storm door

  1. Sun exposure

West- and south-facing entries in full sun need extra care — or a different solution.

  2. Swing and handle side

Match the storm door's hinge side to your entry door and your walking path.

  3. Glass, screen or both

Interchangeable panels, retractable screens or a permanent screen.

  4. Color and hardware

Match frame color to trim; choose a finish that suits your entry hardware.

Questions

Storm & Screen Doors: frequently asked questions

Do storm doors protect against hurricanes?

No. Standard storm doors are not impact-rated and do not replace shutters or impact doors. For hurricane protection, consider an impact-rated entry door.

Will a storm door damage my front door?

It can in direct sun. Heat trapped between the storm door and the entry door can damage some doors and finishes. We check exposure and recommend venting, Low-E glass or a screen-only option where needed.

What is a retractable screen storm door?

A storm door with a screen that rolls up into the frame when not in use and pulls down when you want a breeze — no seasonal panel swapping.

Can you install a storm door on any entry?

Most, as long as there is a flat, sound mounting surface around the door and enough clearance for the entry door's hardware.

Do you install screen doors for garages?

Yes — including screen doors for garage service doors and retractable screen systems for larger openings.
