Tough, efficient and affordable

A steel entry door is a thin steel skin wrapped around an insulating foam core, framed with stiles and rails. It is strong, it seals tightly with magnetic weatherstripping, and it is the most affordable way to replace a worn-out door with a complete, sealed entry system.

That makes steel a great fit for side doors, garage service doors, laundry-room exits and the door between the garage and the house, where durability and code compliance matter more than decorative detail. On a covered front porch, a crisply painted steel door can look every bit as good as a pricier material.

Getting the details right

The difference between a steel door that lasts and one that rusts out at the bottom is mostly in the details:

  • Rot-proof frames and bottom rails, so there is no wood to soak up water from sprinklers.
  • A sill set in sealant or on a sill pan, so water that reaches the threshold drains out, not in.
  • Quality exterior paint over factory primer — and prompt touch-ups if the finish gets scratched.

If you like the idea of steel but want a woodgrain look or a front door on a sunny, exposed elevation, we will also price a comparable fiberglass door so you can compare.

Why steel entry doors

Why homeowners choose steel

Strength and security

A steel skin over a rigid core is tough to force, especially paired with a reinforced frame and long strike screws.

Best value

Steel is usually the least expensive way to get a new, sealed, insulated entry system — often the smart choice for side and utility doors.

Well insulated

Polyurethane foam cores and magnetic weatherstripping create a tight seal against heat and humidity.

Fire-rated options

Steel doors are available with fire ratings for the opening between an attached garage and the house.

Styles & configurations

Steel door styles

Steel doors come smooth or with an embossed woodgrain, in classic and modern designs.

Six-panel & two-panel

Traditional raised-panel designs that suit colonial, ranch and transitional homes.

Shaker & flush

Clean, flat panels for modern and farmhouse looks — great in bold paint colors.

Half-lite & full-lite

Glass inserts bring light into dark hallways and laundry rooms. Choose blinds-between-glass for privacy.

Garage-to-house doors

Fire-rated steel doors that meet code for the opening between an attached garage and living space.

Side & utility doors

Durable, low-cost replacements for side-yard, pool-bath and garage service doors.

Impact-rated steel

A cost-effective way to add impact protection to secondary openings.

Where they work best

Where steel makes the most sense

Garage entries and side doors

Doors that need strength and a fire rating more than decorative detail.

Budget-conscious projects

When the goal is a sealed, secure, code-compliant door without a premium price.

Covered front entries

Under a porch or overhang, a painted steel door looks sharp and stays cooler.

Rental properties

A tough, affordable door that stands up to heavy use and frequent lock changes.

Florida code & climate

Keeping steel doors rust-free in Florida

Steel's weak spot in Florida is moisture at the bottom of the door, especially where sprinklers or reclaimed water hit the entry. A good installation and a few simple habits prevent it.

How impact ratings work
  • We aim sprinklers away from doors during installation walkthroughs and recommend you keep them that way.
  • Scratches through the paint should be touched up promptly so the steel skin never sits bare.
  • Composite bottom rails and frames on better steel lines eliminate the wood that rots at the bottom.
  • Steel skins get hot in direct afternoon sun, so lighter colors are a smart choice on exposed entries.

Before you order

Before you order a steel door

  1. Skin thickness

Lower gauge numbers mean thicker steel and better dent resistance. Ask which gauge you are being quoted.

  2. Edges and frame

Look for composite or steel edges and a rot-proof frame rather than untreated wood.

  3. Paint plan

Factory primed doors need a quality exterior paint. Factory-finished doors cost more but save a step.

  4. Glass and privacy

Decide early if you want glass — full-lite and half-lite styles change the price and the look.

Questions

Steel Entry Doors: frequently asked questions

Do steel doors rust in Florida?

They can if the paint is scratched and the steel stays wet — usually at the bottom edge near sprinklers. With a sound finish, composite bottom rail and sprinklers aimed away, a steel door can last many years.

Is steel more secure than fiberglass?

Both are very secure when paired with a solid frame, reinforced strike and quality deadbolt or multipoint lock. The frame and lock matter more than the skin material.

Can a steel door look like wood?

Some steel doors have an embossed woodgrain that can be painted or stained, but for a convincing wood look, woodgrain fiberglass is usually the better choice.

What door is required between my garage and house?

Code requires a solid-core or fire-rated door (steel doors are a common choice) for the opening between an attached garage and the home. We install compliant doors and hardware.

Are steel doors energy efficient?

Yes. A foam-filled steel door with good weatherstripping insulates far better than a solid wood door of the same thickness.
