When only real wood will do
Some homes call for real wood. A mahogany pair under an arched loggia, a knotty alder plank door with hand-forged straps, a speakeasy door on a Spanish-style home in Winter Park — these are statement pieces, and they are some of our favorite projects.
Wood is also the material that needs the most honest conversation. In Central Florida, a wood door’s lifespan depends on how much sun and rain reaches it and how well its finish is maintained. We look at your entry’s orientation and overhang before we recommend wood, and if a woodgrain fiberglass door would serve you better, we will say so and show you both.
Built to last in our climate
- Engineered construction — stable cores with wood veneers and stiles resist warping far better than solid planks.
- Complete finishing — all six sides sealed, including the top and bottom edges most installers skip.
- Rot-resistant frames and sills — so the most vulnerable parts of the system are not wood at all.
- The right hardware — solid bronze, iron or stainless components that will not streak or corrode.
Ask to see finished samples in daylight. Stain colors shift dramatically between species, and we would rather you choose once and love it.

A small operable window with a decorative iron grille lets you see and talk to visitors without opening the door.
Mahogany contemporaries
Horizontal grain, flush panels and long pull handles for modern builds.
Craftsman & rustic alder
Knotty alder and fir doors with Craftsman lites and dentil shelves.
Double doors & custom pairs
Matched grain pairs with transoms and sidelites for grand entries.

Where they work best
Where wood entry doors work best in Florida
Deep covered entries
Porches, loggias and recessed entries that keep direct sun and rain off the door.
Architectural statement homes
Custom homes in Windermere, Winter Park, Dr. Phillips and Lake Nona where the entry sets the tone.
Owners who enjoy upkeep
Wood rewards regular care. If you do not want to refinish periodically, fiberglass is the better choice.
Historic homes
Restorations in historic districts where authentic materials may be preferred or required.
Florida code & climate
The honest truth about wood doors in Florida
Sun, humidity and termites are hard on wood. That does not mean you cannot have a wood door — it means the door, the finish and the location all need to be right. Many wood door warranties require a minimum overhang to protect the door, so we check your entry before recommending one.
How impact ratings work- Unshaded, west-facing entries can need refinishing every year or two; covered entries last far longer between coats.
- Engineered cores resist warping better than solid lumber in our humidity swings.
- All six sides of a wood door must be sealed — including the top and bottom edges.
- Impact-rated wood doors exist, but the choice of styles and sizes is narrower and the cost is higher.
Before you order
Before you order a wood door
-
Check your overhang
The depth of the covering over your entry affects finish life and, often, the warranty.
-
Pick the species for the look and the budget
Mahogany is stable and classic; knotty alder is rustic; oak is bold-grained. Each takes stain differently.
-
Plan the finish
Decide between factory finishing and on-site finishing, and who will maintain it.
-
Confirm code requirements
The door must still have Florida Product Approval for your design pressure — not every custom door does.

Wood Entry Doors: frequently asked questions
Can I have a wood front door in Florida?
Yes, especially on a covered entry. The key is the right species and construction, a complete six-sided finish and regular maintenance. On fully exposed entries we usually recommend woodgrain fiberglass instead.
How often does a wood door need refinishing?
It depends on exposure. Doors under a deep porch may go several years between topcoats; doors in direct sun may need attention every year or two.
Are wood doors available impact-rated?
Some are. Impact-rated wood doors are built with laminated glass and reinforced construction, and they cost more. We confirm Florida Product Approval for your specific design pressure before ordering.
What is a speakeasy door?
A door with a small window — usually with a decorative iron grille — that opens independently so you can see and talk to someone at the door without opening it.
Do wood doors attract termites?
Any wood near the ground can be at risk. We use rot- and termite-resistant frame components where possible and keep wood off the slab and away from moisture.
