Pivot doors
Oversized pivot doors for a truly modern entry
A pivot door rotates on a hidden spindle instead of hanging on side hinges, which lets it be dramatically wider and taller than a conventional door. We help you choose a pivot door that is right for Florida — and install it with the anchoring, sealing and product approvals the opening needs.

A different way to open a door
A conventional door hangs from hinges on one side of the frame. A pivot door sits on a pivot set into the floor, with a matching pivot at the top, and rotates around that axis. Because the floor carries the weight, pivot doors can be much wider, taller and heavier than anything you would hang on hinges — which is why they have become the signature feature of modern Central Florida homes.
Plan it like the architectural feature it is
A pivot door is not a simple swap. We look at:
- The opening — pivots usually need a wider, taller rough opening and a header that can carry the load.
- The floor — the bottom pivot is anchored into the slab, and the finished floor (tile, stone or wood) must be planned around it.
- The exposure — a covered, recessed entry keeps rain off the seals and dramatically improves performance.
- The approvals — we narrow the options to products approved for Florida at your design pressure before you choose a finish.
When the entry is right, a pivot door is one of the most striking upgrades you can make — and one of the most satisfying doors to use every day.
Why pivot doors
Why homeowners love pivot doors
Oversized proportions
Because the weight sits on the floor pivot rather than side hinges, pivot doors can be much larger than hinged doors.
Architectural impact
A single tall slab with a long pull handle is the defining feature of many contemporary homes.
Smooth, balanced motion
Quality pivot hardware makes even very heavy doors feel light, with controlled closing.
Light and views
Glass pivot doors and tall sidelites flood modern foyers with daylight.
Styles & configurations
Pivot door options
Offset pivot
The pivot sits near one side, so most of the opening becomes a walkway. The most common residential layout.
Center pivot
The door rotates around its middle, creating two passages. A striking look, best for covered, sheltered entries.
Wood & wood-veneer slabs
Warm horizontal-grain woods for mid-century and organic modern homes.
Aluminum & glass
Slim frames with large glass panels — clear, frosted or fluted — for a light, minimalist entry.
Metal-clad & painted
Bold, flat slabs in black, bronze or custom colors.
Long pull handles
Full-height or oversized pulls paired with keyless smart locks.
Where they work best
When a pivot door is the right choice
Covered or recessed entries
Pivot doors are harder to weather-seal than hinged doors, so shelter from wind-driven rain matters.
New builds and major remodels
The floor and header need to be planned for the pivot hardware and door weight.
Contemporary architecture
Flat roofs, clean stucco and large glass — pivots are at home in modern Lake Nona, Windermere and Winter Park builds.
Smart-home owners
Oversized doors pair naturally with keyless entry and integrated locks.
Florida code & climate
Pivot doors and the Florida Building Code
Many pivot doors are sold nationally without Florida Product Approval, and a pivot is inherently harder to seal against wind-driven rain than a hinged door. For an exterior opening we only install products that are approved for Florida and rated for your home's design pressure — which narrows the field, so we start that conversation early.
How impact ratings work- Confirm Florida Product Approval and design pressure for the exact size before you fall in love with a design.
- A deep overhang or recessed entry dramatically improves weather performance.
- The floor must be prepared for the bottom pivot, which carries the full weight of what can be a very heavy door.
- Impact-rated pivot doors are available from select manufacturers, typically with longer lead times.

-
Approval and rating
Start with approved products for your opening size and design pressure, then choose the look.
-
Structure
Check the header, the slab and the finished floor thickness where the bottom pivot will sit.
-
Weather exposure
Look at how much rain and sun reach the entry; add or extend covering if needed.
-
Lead time
Custom pivot doors often take longer to build and ship than conventional doors. Plan around it.

Pivot Doors: frequently asked questions
Are pivot doors a good idea in Florida?
They can be, on the right entry. A covered or recessed entry and a Florida-approved product are the two biggest factors in how well a pivot door performs here.
Do pivot doors leak?
Pivot doors are harder to seal than hinged doors because of how they rotate. Quality products with engineered seals, installed under an overhang, perform well. Exposed entries facing prevailing storms are a tougher fit.
Can a pivot door be impact-rated?
Yes — some manufacturers offer impact-rated pivot doors with Florida approvals, though sizes and styles are more limited than for standard doors.
How wide can a pivot door be?
Residential pivot doors commonly range from about 4 to 6 feet wide and up to 10 feet tall or more, depending on the product and its approval.
Can I add a pivot door to my existing home?
Often, as part of an entry remodel. It usually involves reworking the opening, header and floor, so it is more involved than a like-for-like door replacement.
