What makes a door “impact-rated”
An impact door is a complete system — glass, frame, hardware and anchoring — that has been tested to keep the opening closed during a hurricane. The glass is laminated: two lites bonded to a tough interlayer, so it may crack under a strike but stays in place. The frames are heavier, the locks engage at multiple points, and the anchoring pattern is specified by the product’s approval.
To earn the rating, products are tested with a large-missile impact test — a 9-pound 2x4 fired at the glass at roughly 34 miles per hour — followed by thousands of cycles of positive and negative pressure. Products for Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone in Miami-Dade and Broward are tested to that region’s own protocols; Central Florida homes use products approved for the rest of the state.
Required or optional? We check first.
Whether your home needs impact doors depends on its location, its design wind speed and the building type. Most inland Central Florida homes are outside the wind-borne debris region, which means shutters and impact products are not required — but every exterior door must still be rated for the design pressure at your address. We confirm the requirement before we quote so you can make a clear, unpressured choice.
Why so many homeowners choose impact anyway
- No more storm prep. The opening is protected every hour of every day.
- Security. Laminated glass is very hard to break through.
- Comfort. Less noise, less UV fading, and with Low-E, less heat.
- Insurance. Protected openings can qualify for wind-mitigation credits.
Most homeowners start with the biggest and most-used openings — the lanai slider, the front door and the garage door — and phase in the rest.
Why impact & hurricane doors
What impact doors do for your home
Always-on protection
No panels to haul out, no accordions to close. The opening is protected even if a storm turns overnight or you are out of town.
Security year-round
Laminated glass is extremely hard to break through, and impact doors use heavy frames and multipoint locks.
A quieter home
Laminated glass dampens traffic, airport and neighborhood noise noticeably.
UV and heat control
The laminated interlayer blocks most UV rays that fade floors and furniture; add Low-E for heat.

Matched pairs with heavy-duty head and sill bolts and rated arched transoms.
Where they work best
Who benefits most from impact doors
Seasonal and second-home owners
Protection is in place even when nobody is home to put up shutters.
Anyone tired of storm prep
No more wrestling heavy panels onto a slider in 90-degree heat.
Homes that require it
Some addresses, building types and design pressures require impact protection on all openings.
Homes near noise
Busy roads, flight paths and theme-park fireworks are much quieter behind laminated glass.
Florida code & climate
Do you actually need impact doors in Central Florida?
Florida's code requires impact protection (impact products or shutters) on homes in the wind-borne debris region — broadly, areas with the highest design wind speeds and areas near the coast. Most of inland Central Florida, including most of Orlando, sits outside that region, so impact glass is usually a choice rather than a requirement. Every exterior door must still meet the design pressure for its location.
How impact ratings work- We confirm your home's requirements by address before quoting — never by guesswork.
- Impact-rated and wind-rated are not the same. Wind-rated doors resist pressure; impact-rated doors also survive debris.
- Insurers must offer discounts for qualifying wind-mitigation features; opening protection is one of them. Ask your agent how your policy treats it.
- When funded, the state's My Safe Florida Home program has offered inspections and matching grants toward qualifying opening protection. Check the program's official site for current status.

Before you invest in impact doors
-
Know your requirement
Required or optional? We check your address, building and design pressure first.
-
Think about every opening
Insurance credits typically depend on all openings being protected — including the garage door and entry doors.
-
Choose the glass package
Laminated glass can be combined with Low-E, tints, privacy textures and decorative designs.
-
Plan the order of work
Many owners replace the most-used or most-exposed openings first and phase the rest.

Impact & Hurricane Doors: frequently asked questions
Are impact doors required in Orlando?
Usually not. Most of Orlando and inland Central Florida is outside the wind-borne debris region, so impact protection is optional for most homes. Requirements vary by address and building, and every door must still meet the required design pressure. We confirm your requirement before quoting.
What is the difference between impact-rated and wind-rated?
A wind-rated door is tested to resist a specified wind pressure. An impact-rated door is also tested against wind-borne debris — including a large-missile test using a 2x4 fired at the glass — followed by cyclic pressure testing.
Does impact glass break?
It can crack, but it is designed to stay in the frame. Impact glass is laminated — two layers bonded to a tough interlayer — so the opening stays closed even when the glass is damaged.
Will impact doors lower my insurance?
They may. Florida insurers must offer credits for qualifying wind-mitigation features, and opening protection is one of them — usually when every opening is protected. Ask your agent, and have a wind-mitigation inspection done after installation.
Can I add impact glass to my existing door?
Generally no. Impact ratings apply to the complete tested assembly — glass, frame, hardware and anchoring — so the door is replaced as a system.
How can I tell if a door is impact-rated?
New impact products carry labels and are listed with a Florida Product Approval number that shows the impact rating and design pressure. We provide these documents with your job.
